Each summer, a friend invites her friends up to her cabin for a long weekend. Every year, there are new faces (friends of friends who have been invited) and familiar faces who wouldn’t miss the weekend for the world. A caterer is hired to provide meals, so we can all truly relax.

We color. We sleep in tents. We sleep in hammocks. We eat. We make jewelry. We do our nails. We read. We sit. We stargaze. We talk. We hike. We do nothing. The group includes a number of accomplished kayakers and mountain bikers, so they often bring their equipment to explore the nearby park.

The weekend kicks off on Thursday, but I’ve typically gone Friday – Sunday. This year, I had chemo on Thursday and drove up with a friend on Friday.

It’s a rejuvenating weekend to be away from daily life, to be in nature, and to be with friends. This year, it was a bit exhausting for me because I usually start fatiguing the weekend after chemo, but I am so grateful to be in the company of these amazing, talented, and determined women.
