A few years ago, we started making smoothies as a way to get everyone in the household to eat more fruits and vegetables. Nowadays, I can usually guilt everyone into drinking one, because I ask, “Wanna smoothie? It fights cancer.” If the answer is “No,” then I follow-up with, “Do you want cancer?” The kids usually but not always partake in the cancer fighting smoothie goodness when I guilt them. I don’t like to play the cancer card, but I’ll use it when necessary.
My basic recipe is:
1 cup greens (kale, spinach, or Swiss chard)
1 cup liquid (coconut water, almond milk, soy milk, or yogurt)
1 cup frozen fruit (berries, peaches, cherries, or mangoes)
Optional
* 1 banana
* 1 T chia seeds
* 1 scoop of protein powder or peanut butter powder
Stick in blender and whirl. This makes 12-14 oz of smoothie, which can serve 1-2 people.
Here’s my smoothie smarts I’ve collected over the years:
– Swiss chard tastes very chard-y, so if you’re not a fan, stick to kale or spinach.
– If you have a powerful blender, then leave on the kale stems. Less work for you.
– Yogurt makes a thicker smoothie
– Coconut water makes a thinner smoothie
While I can’t necessarily prove that my smoothies fight cancer, I do know the more fruits and vegetables we consume, the better. Wanna smoothie?
